Dunks & Assisted Dunks
Two counts — how many dunks a player threw down, and how many of them were set up by a teammate — a cheap proxy for rim gravity and off-ball finishing.

Why it exists
Dunks are among the most efficient shots in basketball — they convert at an extremely high rate with almost no variance from game to game. A player who consistently dunks the ball is either finishing lobs, running the floor ahead of the defense, or getting position at the rim deep enough that the opposition can't contest effectively. All three of those skills are worth counting.
Assisted dunks add a second layer of information. When a player dunks off a pass, it tells you something about how they're being used: they're operating in space that a teammate created, finishing off a designed play, or running a cut that the offense is consistently generating. Unassisted dunks, on the other hand, suggest self-created rim access — offensive rebounding put-backs, drive finishes, or pure athleticism through traffic. Splitting the total into assisted and unassisted gives a rough read on whether the player is a system finisher or an initiator who gets himself to the rim.

These are raw counts from the play-by-play data. Dunk classification comes from the shot type field in the PBP feed — the system does not infer whether a shot was a dunk; it reads the tag directly. Missed dunks are not counted, which means the stat undercounts rim aggression for players who attempt dunks they don't convert, but it keeps the measure clean and unambiguous.
Worked example
A center plays 28 minutes and registers 4 made field goals tagged as dunks. Of those, 3 came off passes from the point guard (lob sets and drive kick-outs), and 1 was an unassisted put-back after an offensive rebound. His dunk line: 4 dunks, 3 assisted.
A wing on the same team plays 30 minutes with 2 dunks — both on fast breaks, both unassisted, both self-created off steals he converted in transition. His dunk line: 2 dunks, 0 assisted.
The center has higher raw volume, but the context is different: he's being found by the offense. The wing is getting to the rim on his own. Both numbers are small; over a season, the separation becomes meaningful.
How to read it
Dunk volume is highly role-dependent. Guards rarely dunk; mobile bigs who play above the rim can accumulate substantial counts over a full season. Context matters enormously — compare players at the same position and in similar system roles.

The assisted dunk rate — assisted dunks divided by total dunks — gives a quick sense of how much the offense is designed to find this player at the rim versus how often he gets there himself. A rate above 70% points toward a system finisher; below 30% suggests more self-initiated rim access.
Limitations
Missed dunks are excluded entirely. A player who attacks the rim aggressively and occasionally gets his dunk attempt blocked or rims out will appear to have lower dunk volume than his rim gravity actually warrants. If you're using dunks as a proxy for interior presence, pairing it with overall rim attempt rate (field goal attempts at the rim, made and missed) gives a more complete picture.
The stat also doesn't capture value relative to difficulty. A one-handed flush on a backdoor cut against a set defense is worth the same as a wide-open fast-break slam with a two-step lead. Both count as one dunk. The number is a volume measure, not a quality measure.
