RNP vs plus/minus
Plus/minus tells you what happened on the scoreboard while a player was on the floor. RNP tells you what that player specifically produced and allowed. Same dimension — points — but one is a team scalar, the other is an individual curve.

Both stats, one sentence each
Plus/minus and RNP both try to answer "did this player help their team tonight?" — but they answer it differently.
- Plus/minus — the score margin while you were on the floor. If you were on for a 12–2 run, your plus/minus is +10. It doesn't care who shot, dribbled, fouled, or stood in the corner; it's whatever the scoreboard did.
- RNP — the points you produced, minus the points you allowed, accumulated possession by possession. It's an attributed curve, not a team scalar.

What plus/minus does well
The strength of plus/minus is that it picks up things stat sheets miss. A great screen-setter who never touches the ball, a help defender whose presence rotates the whole offense, a connector who keeps possessions alive without earning a stat — they can post a strong plus/minus on a night where the box score is empty. The scoreboard saw it even if the box score didn't.
The weakness is the same fact from the other side. Because plus/minus is bound to the team, it inherits everyone else's shooting variance. If your bench unit catches fire while you're standing in the corner, you get the credit. If your starters miss everything while you do all the right things, you get the debit. At the single-game level, the noise often swamps the signal.
What RNP does differently
RNP is attributed. Instead of crediting you for everything that happened, it computes how many points you specifically produced — your share of made FGs, adjusted for assists, free throws, and offensive rebounds, in the spirit of Dean Oliver's points produced — and subtracts the points you specifically allowed, derived from your team's defensive rating scaled by the opponent possessions you were on the floor for.
Two consequences fall out of this:
- It's individual, not team-bound. Your RNP doesn't change because a teammate caught fire or went cold. If you scored 18 on 60% with 4 assists, your produced number is high regardless of what the rest of the floor was doing.
- It's continuous over the game. RNP runs possession by possession, so the chart shows a trajectory — when you built up the lead in produced points, when the defense started leaking. Plus/minus only exists as a final number.
That second point is the visual wedge. Plus/minus is a single integer at the end of the night. RNP is a curve. You can look at when in the game a player did their work; you can see whether they faded, surged late, or held steady throughout.
Where RNP is weaker
RNP leans on the box score to assign credit. A great defender who doesn't accumulate steals, blocks, or contested shots is undercounted by RNP the same way Oliver's defensive rating undercounts them. Plus/minus, blunt as it is, can catch that impact — it just can't tell you why.
So if you're trying to evaluate a player whose value is mostly invisible to the play-by-play (positioning, screen avoidance, shot deterrence without the contest), plus/minus is the more honest read. For everyone else — the ball-handlers, scorers, passers, rebounders, and recorded-defense players who make up most of a roster — RNP is the more attributable number, and the curve gives you context plus/minus simply can't.
Side by side, one possession at a time
Imagine a possession where your player swings a pass to a corner shooter, who buries a three.
- Plus/minus for everyone on the floor: +3 (offense), or −3 if you're on defense. Five identical numbers per side, because that's the scoreboard delta.
- RNP distributes the +3 unevenly. The shooter gets the largest share. The passer (your player) gets a smaller share scaled to the value of an assisted three. Two off-ball teammates who weren't involved get nothing. The five defenders absorb a fractional debit; the primary defender of the shooter takes a slightly larger share than the others.
Run that asymmetry across a hundred possessions and you have RNP's curve. Sum the symmetric scoreboard deltas across the same possessions and you have plus/minus.
Short version
Plus/minus = "what happened with you on the floor." RNP = "what you specifically produced and allowed."
Use plus/minus when you want a quick read on team outcomes during a player's minutes. Use RNP when you want to know what that player actually did with those minutes — and when in the game they did it.
